Homemade Chinese Food

I'm cheating today because the only part I had in the creation of these dishes was buying the ingredients. My mom who is visiting made them: stir fry chicken with vegetables; beef and broccoli; and garlic chicken with rice noodles. Delicious.

Route 58 Deli and Poker Face

© Sylvia Liu
We just came back from the best deli restaurant in Virginia Beach, Route 58 Deli, that has authentic Jewish deli food, as good as any in New York. This was me sketching my empty plate.

Earlier in the afternoon, we played poker with the kids, our family tradition. Here's my sister:

I figure if I keep working on people, I will come close to a likeness at some point. Now back to the poker table.

Claes Oldeburg's Giant Eraser

© Sylvia Liu
A two minute sketch (not done at location but after I got home) of Claes Oldenburg's giant eraser sculpture that I saw today at the National Sculpture Garden. This was my favorite one because I remember my dad having one of these erasers when I was young, and he used to use it for his engineer drafting.

Cousins at the Washington Monument

Today I walked 19,237 steps, or 8.4 miles (as measured by my new Fitbit) around the monuments and museums. My daughters and their cousin had a great time vamping in front of the monuments. This sketch doesn't really do them justice.

Asiago & prosciutto appetizers (with photos of candy appetizers)

Oops - I forgot to take a picture and post my creative thing yesterday, so the picture I'm posting is an old creation: gummy fish, fruit leather and rice krispie sushi. A friend and I made these several years ago for our daughters' end of the year school party. Along with burgers made of cookies and icing:

As for my creation yesterday, I made an appetizer for a party we went to, Asiago & Prosciutto. Here's the recipe:

Cut Asiago cheese into small strips, about 1/4 inch thick and 2 inches long

Wrap each cheese stick with a strip of prosciutto

Drizzle with olive oil and balsamic vinegar

Salt and Pepper

Very simple and delicious. Not super healthy though.

Doodles on Post It Notes

© Sylvia Liu
Today was busy but I found myself doodling in my spare time. Some of my go to characters: Il Magnifico Octopus, penguinito, and raven. Playing around with colors - I think they may be a bit jarring.

Zentangle Octopus and Flower

© Sylvia Liu
A doodle I did while in my writing class today, inspired by my 13-year old's zentangle doodle that she made in her study hall (mmm, do you think she has too much spare time?):

The Finished Badge

Is this cheating? My creation today is the finished badge for Create One a Day. It did take me some time to find the right font for the badge (heh heh). Feel free to grab it for your sidebars.

In looking for fonts, I remembered I had bought a font pack that I had never installed, so that was a good thing to be reminded of. I got them from Creative Market, a cool site for handcrafted fonts, vector graphics and more. They often run specials that package a bunch of stuff together for reasonable prices.

Create One a Day Badge: Pirate Parrot

Today I started working on the Create One a Day badge. I'll finish it tomorrow with text so that people can use it as a handy badge to add to their sidebars.

Doodle Day: Boots

© Sylvia Liu

This doodle is one of several sketches I've made in preparation for an illustration for a story I have in mind. The one above I did today in about 15 minutes. The one below is an earlier, and I think more successful version, because it's more dramatic:

Doodle Day: Skates

My entry for today's Doodle Day prompt, SKATES (this month's prompts are holiday related words). Skates are among my favorite creatures to see while diving or snorkeling.

Welcome: What is this About?

© Sylvia Liu
I like to participate in illustration and other creative challenges like Doodle Day. But I often get distracted and end up not completing them.

Inspired by my critique mate Teresa Robeson (check out One Good Thing, her 365 day challenge), and needing an accountability mechanism, I have decided to commit to this: Create One a Day. It doesn't have to be art. It just has to be something I made that didn't exist before.

So here's my first entry. This illustration goes with my holiday story entry for Susanna Hill's 4th Annual Holiday Writing Contest.

If you would like to join me, drop me a line on the contact form or in the comments, and I'll add your daily challenge site to my blogroll on this site.
