Ode to Skottie Young's Fortunately the Milk Illustrations

A good way to practice different styles is to copy others. I am figuring out some pirate figures so I copied Skottie Young's pirate sketches from Neil Gaiman's FORTUNATELY THE MILK. Figures A, B, and C are copies. D is my own creation channeling the same vibe.

Kraken Sketches

I have been sketching just not scanning them. So I'm back dating these and adding them...

Black Vortex of Productivity

© Sylvia Liu
There once was a black hole
That swallowed a week
That swallowed a day
That swallowed all my productivity.

Ha. I didn't even try to make that rhyme or scan. I've tried hard to keep up with a post a day but sometimes life just gets in the way.

Nail Art

One of the few activities Sammi can do without worsening her post-concussion headache is nail polish, so she's gotten creative over the last month. This is today's creation.

Here is a previous one done on her sister:

These swirls are done by first making a pattern of nail polish in a cup of water, and the dipping your fingers into the pattern:

Our Pottery Fired

We got the pottery that we painted mailed to us. These two pieces were ones that Sammi made, and here's my fish plate:

Sarah's Poster on Order of Operations

© Sarah Jacobs
On some days, I cheat and post my daughters' creations. Since I helped create my daughters, their creations are sort of mine, right? This was Sarah's math assignment, to come up with a mnemonic device to remember the order of operations in formulas (parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction).

My First 20 Kraken for Design 100 Krakens

© Sylvia Liu
I'm about 85% happy with my kraken character for my story, but I am still exploring possibilities. I've probably doodled 100 krakens already, but I'm going to start again now. First 20.

Imaginary H Friends (Doodle Day)

© Sylvia Liu
A lot of Doodle Day sketches turn into elaborate illustrations, so I decided to really just doodle, not spending more than a minute per doodle. My imaginary H friends.

Golem and Wall Breaker Sketch

© Sylvia Liu
For Doodle Day's Imaginary Friends G for Golem. This is my fan art for Clash of Clans, a way too addictive game that seems to be played mostly by teenaged boys. (My teenaged nephew introduced me to the game and I'm in his clan with a bunch of other teenaged boys).

I also just remembered to use my PS Express app to clean up my photo of my sketch while I've been traveling. This was my untouched sketch:

Another 20 Penguins in Ink

This is almost the last batch. I think I'm up to 82 penguins, give or take a few.

Paint Your Own Fish

I took Sammi to a Paint Your Own Pottery place and we had a great time. This was my fish plate that I did, while Sammi painted this cookie jar:

I can't wait to see how it turns out fired.

20 Penguins, including Miki, Kiki, and Zukiki

© Sylvia Liu

Kiki, Miki, and Zukiki are creations of my daughters, Sammi & Sarah and their good friend Sarah. They are writing a picture book story that I'm to illustrate, inspired in part by some of these 20 penguins.

Penguins on a Ski Vacation

© Sylvia Liu

I am on vacation now, so I don't have access to a scanner. Am posting these up with my phone camera.
